Precautions when shopping online

Make sure the vendor provides a physical address and business registration details (ACN/ABN number).

Make sure you know exactly what you are buying. Is there a picture and/or clear description? Know how much you're paying.

Make sure you know the total amount you are paying, including delivery, in Australian currency before agreeing to buy.

Find out whether the company offers a warranty on the goods you buy.

Check delivery details - both timing and costs. Are the goods insured against damage as part of the delivery deal?

Check for the returns policy - can you send back the goods if they are unsatisfactory?

Print out copies of any forms you fill in and pages on the site that outline the offer that you have accepted. Also keep any email correspondence.

Check the business' privacy policy and terms and conditions of use on their web site.

Secure Shopping

To ensure that your credit card details are safe, look for:

An image of a key or padlock icon at the bottom of your web browser - if it isn't broken the site's secure
The address at the top of the browser - if the site is secure the address will be 'https://' instead of the usual 'http://'; and
Ensure your computer is protected by up to date anti-virus software.
